Fall ‘25; Day 2

7:30 am: it is a balmy 58 degrees when we packed up to leave Rapid City. Today, we are heading to Big Bear Lodge in Dayton Wyoming.

We got some groceries in a town called Sheridan (last town with a Walmart for quite a few miles). An hour or so later we arrived at our campsite around 2:00 pm, covering 270 miles today. We are in the Bighorn Forest.

Tucked away little spot!

Bill, Deb and I drove about 10 miles to check out a 4.6 mile hike with a 1000 feet elevation increase. It is called Black Mountain Lookout Trail. In the early 1900s they set up fire lookout stations that were manned during peak fire seasons. We made our way to one of the three remaining stations. The views were awesome and definitely worth the trek.

Almost to the top! See fire station up above!

Mother moose with her cub

In the evening we drove around the area looking for some of the wildlife. We mostly enjoyed the beautiful land and had about given up on seeing any wild animals, when Dave tried one more road and we saw a mother moose with her young calf. All of a sudden we saw the male as he was eating in the brush. I think we were bothering him so he started to go towards his family. I caught a pic, but not great as it was almost dark. Still way cool.
