Day 5, September 6, 2025

Yellowstone National Park is truly amazing. This morning we started out around 7:30 and within about 5-10 minutes driving into the park, we saw a bear! So exciting! We think he is a brown black bear, but not positive. It was probably 50 yards from the truck.

Then almost right after the bear we saw these elk along the side.

Then we saw this bison cross the river. Again, very cool!

So we had a pretty wonderful morning all within first the hour when we had some ‘not so great’ excitement. The bear spray can sitting right beside me went off! We heard this hissing sound and I pretty quickly realized what it was. It was spewing on my right side pant leg, a vest and other items sitting between Deb and me. Everyone started rolling down their windows and everything was pretty crazy. Dave saw a road that said Do Not Enter, but he crossed the lane and pulled off. We all jumped out and coughed and breathed in clean air. After we checked to make sure we were alright, I tried cleaning what we could with wet wipes. We drove with windows down and made our way to a visitor center. We cleaned everything as best we could and checked with folks that sell or rent bear spray. We learned that we should all be fine. Thank goodness!

Yellowstone Lake

Yesterday we focused on water falls, today our focus is on lakes! We walked on a trail that came out on sections of Yellowstone Lake. It is the largest high elevation lake in North America. It covers 132 square miles and is about 20 miles long and 14 miles wide. It is also quite deep with an average of 138 to 140‘ in depth but also sections up to 430 feet in depth.

Then we took a trail that led to the Shoshone Lake. Again, very beautiful and it covers 8050 acres and is the largest lake with no roads up to it (in the lower 48 states)

Along the trails, we saw some interesting things. Here is a little squirrel that kept chirping at us.

Quite a few trees down in one of the trails
Kind of like a ground hog.
Pretty marsh areas
