On October 5th, we left Gerfask and made our way to Ontonagon. On our way, we stopped in Marquette, MI (the largest Michigan city in the UP). It was pretty windy but we unloaded our bikes and rode on the Iron Ore Heritage trail and through parts of the city. It was lovely. Marquette is located along the shores of Lake Superior. On this trip, we have seen three of the Great Lakes: Michigan, Huron and now Superior.

We pulled off here to get on the trail. The bee hive-looking thing is a kiln that they used to melt iron.

We had a good ride, about 18 miles with interesting history.

It was 216 miles from Germfask to Ontonagon. The campground was on a dead-end road, quite small, but had full hook ups. 🙂 The final trek was pretty windy (around 20-25 mph). It rained a little in the night and the winds picked back up around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, the 8th. With winds over 20 mph and temps around 50-55 degrees, we headed to the Porcupine Mountains. We went hiking and found everything to be really scenic.

Here’s a picture of Lake Superior on our way to the Porcupine Mountains.

Here are a few pics from the Cloud Lake and Escarpment Trail.

We went on the Lake Superior Trail for a bit as well. Here is Lake Superior in the background. All in all, we went about 7 miles. These trails were rocky and roots so kind of slow going once in awhile.

On our way out of the mountains, we had amazing pizza at Porkies Outpost. We wanted you to see this sign, but were joking around. I must have thought it was really funny.

Still windy and cold, we tried to go to a copper mine for a tour, but they were closed this afternoon. We took it easy in the afternoon and are preparing to leave for Biwabik, MN tomorrow.
