We left Galena on Tuesday, October 1, and made a long trek to Paris, Michigan. We stayed at Paris Park Campground. (I would rate it an 3 – dirt sites, uneven.) After getting set up, we checked out the area and stopped at Crankers, a local brewery.
On Wednesday, the 2nd, we made our way to the Manistee Forest and hiked the Manistee River Trail and North Country Trail. The area is quite isolated, you drive a few miles into the forest area and wonder if you are the only people there. The trails were pretty easy to walk on and we covered quite a bit of territory (almost 9 miles). Although, they were pretty well marked, we did get lost a couple of times, but only for a short time.

A suspension bridge along the trail.

Fall colors are more vivid every day of our trip. Pretty views.
After the hike, we headed to Empire and the Sleeping Bear Lakeshore Park. We climbed the dunes and saw Glen Lake on one side and Lake Michigan on the other side.

Dave coming up the dune with Glen Lake behind him.

To get to Lake Michigan, we walked 1.7 miles in the dunes.

After getting sand out of our shoes and socks, we headed back to the campground. There was a recreation trail connected to the campground, so Debbie and I checked it out. We rode bike for about 30 minutes but found it to be pretty bumpy (like Yale to Herndon) and boring. In the evening, we had chili and sat by a fire.

On Thursday, the 3rd, we made our way towards Mackinac Island.
