Day 12, September 12

travel Day, leaving White Mountain area

We packed up the camper first thing and made our way to the White Mountain Auto Road in order to go to the summit of the White Mountain, which is a little over 6,000 feet. Bill drove up the 7.6 miles up the mountain. We knew it would be cold and low visibility, but we decided to try it. Here is a pic on the way up. Looks lovely, doesn’t it!?

As we get closer to the top…

When we got to the top, it was 49 degrees, 75 mph winds…

Here we are as we go back to the pickup….

Whew! What an experience.

Got back down to normal civilization and began our way to Scarborough, Maine (a suburb of Portland.) By the way, it is 80 degrees here and beautiful.

This is the Portland Head Light, the oldest and most photographed lighthouse that was commissioned to be built by President Washington in 1791. It is in Fort Williams Park. It includes a scenic walk along the coast.

In the evening, we checked old Portland and ate at a cool restaurant along the pier called DiMillo’s. It is a restaurant that opened in 1954 and eventually was moved to a waterfront location in an old Long Wharf. Afterwards we checked out the area.
